What causes ringing in one ear?

Ringing in one ear is called unilateral tinnitus. Common causes include:

• Earwax blockage or a foreign object in the ear
• Loud noise exposure affecting that ear
• Ear infection or fluid buildup
• Ménière’s disease, which often comes with vertigo and ear fullness
• TMJ or neck tension
• Blood vessel problems that cause a pulsing sound
• Less commonly, a vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma)

Get it checked promptly, especially if it’s new or only in one ear. Seek urgent care if you also have:

• Sudden hearing loss
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Facial weakness
• Ear drainage
• A pulsing sound in time with your heartbeat
