QUESTION
Will therapists lose clients to AI companions?
Probably some, but not most. AI companions are likely to take a share of the market from therapists by offering cheap, always-available emotional support, coping prompts, and a low-barrier option for people who can’t afford therapy, face long waitlists, or just want 24/7 check-ins.
That said, they’re unlikely to replace human therapists broadly. The therapeutic relationship itself is a major part of effective therapy, and many clients still need a clinician’s trust, accountability, diagnosis, treatment planning, and crisis judgment. AI systems also don’t have the same legal and ethical framework as licensed professionals for diagnosing or treating clinical psychiatric conditions.
So the short answer is: therapists may lose some clients to AI companions for basic support and informal emotional venting, but AI is more likely to change how people access help than eliminate the need for therapists.
