Will AI replace Google Maps for trip planning?

AI is unlikely to completely replace Google Maps for trip planning; more likely, the two will complement each other.

AI tools are great for the brainstorming phase: generating custom itineraries, surfacing niche ideas, and tailoring suggestions to a traveler’s preferences. But they can still get details wrong, especially when it comes to live traffic, exact business hours, temporary closures, transit changes, or realistic walking times.

Google Maps is stronger for the execution phase because it is built around mapped, location-based, and frequently updated information: directions, navigation, traffic, transit, nearby places, and place details. It is also adding more AI features of its own, such as review summaries and location suggestions, so the line between “AI” and “maps” is likely to keep blurring.

The most practical workflow is usually: use AI to design the trip, then verify and execute it in a mapping app with current local data. Over time, mapping apps and AI assistants will probably overlap more, but for now AI is better at planning concepts, while Google Maps is better at ground-truth navigation and logistics.
