Your stomach makes noises in quiet rooms because your digestive tract is always moving gas, liquid, and food with muscle contractions called peristalsis. In a noisy place, those sounds get covered up. In a quiet room, you just notice them more.
It’s often louder when you’re hungry. An empty stomach and intestines can act like an echo chamber, so normal churning and gas movement sounds bigger. After eating, you can still get rumbling from digestion, swallowed air, carbonated drinks, or gas-producing foods.
To make it less noticeable:
- Eat a small snack beforehand
- Sip water
- Eat slowly and avoid gulping air
- Cut back on gum, soda, and very gassy foods before quiet situations
Occasional stomach noises are normal.
