A gas smell only after filling up is usually caused by a fuel vapor/EVAP issue, not an active leak all the time.
Most common causes:
- Topping off the tank after the pump clicks off. Liquid fuel can get into the EVAP charcoal canister or vent lines and cause a strong smell.
- Bad gas cap seal or cap not tightened fully.
- Fuel filler neck or vent hose crack, rust, or loose connection near the fuel door/rear wheel area.
- Fuel pump seal/O-ring on top of the tank leaking vapors when the tank is full.
What to do:
- Stop filling as soon as the nozzle clicks off.
- Check and reseat the gas cap.
- Look for wet spots or fuel staining around the filler area.
- If the check engine light is on, scan for EVAP codes.
If the smell is strong, lasts while driving, or you see any dripping fuel, have the car inspected right away.
