A gas smell only after filling up is usually caused by a fuel vapor/EVAP issue, not an active leak all the time.

Most common causes:

  • Topping off the tank after the pump clicks off. Liquid fuel can get into the EVAP charcoal canister or vent lines and cause a strong smell.
  • Bad gas cap seal or cap not tightened fully.
  • Fuel filler neck or vent hose crack, rust, or loose connection near the fuel door/rear wheel area.
  • Fuel pump seal/O-ring on top of the tank leaking vapors when the tank is full.

What to do:

  1. Stop filling as soon as the nozzle clicks off.
  2. Check and reseat the gas cap.
  3. Look for wet spots or fuel staining around the filler area.
  4. If the check engine light is on, scan for EVAP codes.

If the smell is strong, lasts while driving, or you see any dripping fuel, have the car inspected right away.
