Feeling more hopeful at the start is very common. Beginning a project feels full of possibility: your brain is focused on what could happen, not on the hard parts yet. The project is still a blank slate, so it feels cleaner, simpler, and more exciting.

Near the end, hope can dip because you’re facing tradeoffs, imperfections, and evaluation. Finishing can also feel oddly flat if the project gave you structure and momentum, and then suddenly that structure is gone.

What helps:

  • Line up the next small goal before you finish.
  • Treat finishing as a phase, not a judgment.
  • Notice and celebrate the effort, not just the result.

If this feeling is mild, it’s normal. If it’s intense or happens with lots of tasks, stress, burnout, or executive-function issues may be part of it.
