Why does my Wi-Fi work downstairs but not upstairs?

Your Wi‑Fi works downstairs but not upstairs because the signal is getting weakened by distance and by the floor between levels. Wi‑Fi doesn’t travel through solid materials very well, especially floors with wood, drywall, pipes, ductwork, or metal.

Common causes

• Router placement: If the router is low, in a corner, or behind furniture, the signal has to fight harder to reach upstairs.
• Frequency band: 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range and struggles more through floors. 2.4 GHz reaches farther, though it’s usually slower.
• House materials: Concrete, plaster, metal, and lots of plumbing can block the signal.

• Move the router higher and more centrally.
• Connect upstairs devices to the 2.4 GHz network.
