A toddler who wakes up crying every night is often dealing with overtiredness, separation anxiety, or physical discomfort. It’s a common phase, but the pattern usually has a trigger.
Most common reasons:
- Too tired or an off schedule — skipped naps, late bedtime, or too much stimulation can make sleep more broken.
- Separation anxiety / sleep regressions — they wake between sleep cycles, notice you’re gone, and cry for help getting back to sleep.
- Discomfort or illness — teething, ear infections, congestion, sore throat, or being too hot/cold can all wake them.
- Nightmares or night terrors — nightmares usually wake them fully; night terrors often happen earlier in the night and the child may still be partly asleep.
What helps:
- Keep a steady bedtime and nap routine.
- Aim for enough total sleep for their age.
- Help them fall asleep without needing a parent to stay with them.
- Check for temperature issues and use a sleep sack if needed.
Call the pediatrician if there’s fever, ear pulling, snoring/mouth-breathing, or a sudden big change in sleep behavior.
