QUESTION
Why does my toddler wake up at 5 AM every day?
Toddlers who wake around 5:00 AM every day often do so because of a mix of sleep timing, habits, and environment rather than one single cause. Common reasons include:
-
They may be overtired
If a toddler stays awake too long before bed or isn’t getting enough daytime sleep, they may have a harder time staying asleep through the early morning. -
They may be getting enough sleep overall and simply be ready to start early
Some toddlers naturally wake early, especially if their nap and bedtime schedule leaves them with the amount of sleep their body wants. -
Morning light or noise may be waking them
Early sunlight, birds, house noise, or a room that gets brighter near dawn can be enough to wake a toddler once sleep becomes lighter in the early morning. -
The wake-up may be getting reinforced
If waking at 5:00 AM consistently leads to milk, screens, lots of attention, or getting into your bed, your toddler may learn that 5:00 AM is an acceptable wake time.
What can help:
- Keep a simple sleep log for a few days to see whether bedtime, nap length, or total sleep may be part of the pattern.
- Make the room as dark as possible and keep it cool and quiet.
- Use an okay-to-wake light or clock and gradually move the wake time later.
- Treat early waking as boring: keep lights off, avoid screens, and delay food or play until your target wake time.
If the early waking is new, or your toddler snores, mouths-breathes, seems unusually sleepy, or has other symptoms, check with your pediatrician because sleep apnea, reflux, discomfort, or other medical issues can also play a role.
