QUESTION
Why does my toddler wake up at 5 AM?
Early morning waking around 5:00 AM is very common in toddlers. In many children, sleep is lighter in the early morning, so light, noise, hunger, or a schedule mismatch can make them wake more easily.
Common reasons include:
1. Overtiredness
If your toddler is getting too little sleep overall or bedtime is too late, early waking can become more likely.
What to try: Move bedtime earlier by 15 to 30 minutes for a few nights and see whether that helps.
2. Environmental triggers
Light and noise are frequent culprits between about 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
What to try: Use blackout shades and white noise if helpful.
3. Bedtime may be too early for your child’s sleep needs
Some toddlers sleep about 10 to 12 hours overnight, so if bedtime is very early, a 5:00 AM wake-up may simply be the end of their night.
What to try: If your toddler seems well-rested overall, gradually shift bedtime later by about 15 minutes every few nights.
4. Nap timing or sleep pressure
A long, late, or poorly timed nap can reduce sleep pressure at night and lead to early waking.
What to try: Look at the nap length and timing, and make sure there’s enough awake time before bedtime.
5. The wake-up is being reinforced
If 5:00 AM consistently leads to getting into your bed, milk, screens, or lots of attention, your toddler may learn that 5:00 AM is wake-up time.
What to try: Keep responses calm and boring, and treat wake-ups before your desired morning time like nighttime.
Temporary causes such as teething, illness, growth spurts, or developmental changes can also cause early waking.
If this is a sudden change, or your child snores, seems uncomfortable, or has other symptoms, check with your pediatrician.
