It’s usually a mix of hunger, control, and testing limits. Toddlers often throw food to see what happens, to assert independence, or because they’re done with the meal but not actually done eating. Later, when they’re hungry again, they ask for snacks because snacks are easier, more predictable, and often more appealing than dinner.
What helps:
- Keep meals and snacks on a routine, about 2.5–3 hours apart.
- Offer water between meals; avoid filling up on milk or grazing snacks.
- Stay neutral when food is thrown: “Food stays on the table.”
- If they throw it again, end the meal calmly.
- Don’t replace dinner with a favorite snack right after refusal.
- Include one “safe” food they usually like.
- Teach an “all done” bowl for unwanted food.
The key is consistency: food thrown = meal over, snack comes later on schedule.
