Totally normal. Toddlers repeat the same question because they’re learning, not trying to wear you out.
Why it happens:
- They’re testing understanding. Repeating a question helps them check that the answer stays the same.
- They like predictability. The same answer feels safe and reassuring.
- They’re practicing language. Repetition helps them learn words, timing, and back-and-forth conversation.
- They want connection. Sometimes the question is really a way to keep you engaged.
What helps:
- Answer calmly and consistently.
- Ask, “What do you think?” to nudge their own thinking.
- Add one small detail to the answer.
- Name the feeling if the question is about separation or worry.
- Use a simple picture schedule for repeat questions about the day.
If the question is really about comfort, reassurance usually works better than a long explanation.
