Why does my toddler repeat one line from a show all day?

It’s very common for toddlers to repeat a single line from a show all day. This is often called scripting or delayed echolalia.

Common reasons include:

• Language practice: Toddlers often repeat sounds and phrases they like because they’re fun and predictable.
• Emotion or regulation: A familiar line can be soothing, especially when they’re tired, excited, or overwhelmed.
• Meaning-making: They may be using the line to express a feeling or idea, even if it doesn’t sound literal to adults.

• Language development style: Some children naturally learn language in larger chunks or phrases before using them more flexibly.

How to respond:
You usually don’t need to stop it. You can acknowledge the line and gently connect it to real life, for example: “Yes, that was the dog on the show. Do you want to play with your puppy?”
