Why does my toddler hide toys in shoes?

Toddlers hiding toys in shoes is usually a normal part of early play and exploration. They may be testing how objects fit into spaces, enjoying a simple hiding game, or experimenting with cause and effect and your reaction when the toy is found. It can also be a way of practicing independence and making a “special place” for favorite items.

How to handle it:

• Redirect them to safe containers like bins, baskets, boxes, tissue boxes, or nesting cups.
• Keep shoes out of reach if it keeps happening.
• Always check shoes before putting them on.

One caveat: if your toddler is hiding perishable food, small hazardous items, or anything unsafe, supervise more closely and redirect them firmly to safer containers.
