Why do toddlers hate getting dressed?

Toddlers often hate getting dressed because it hits three sore spots at once: control, comfort, and transition.

• They want autonomy. Around age 2, toddlers strongly resist being told what to do with their bodies.
• It can feel bad physically. Tags, seams, tight waistbands, scratchy fabrics, cold air, or a shirt going over the head can be upsetting.
• It interrupts play. Stopping a fun activity to change clothes feels like a big loss to a toddler.
• They want to do it themselves. But their motor skills are still developing, so dressing can be frustrating.
