Why does my toddler carry the same toy everywhere?

It’s very common. Toddlers often carry the same toy because it acts like a comfort object or “lovey”: it helps them feel safe, calm, and in control.

Why it happens

• Security: it stands in for you when they’re away from home or feeling unsure.
• Self-soothing: they use it to calm down when tired, upset, or overstimulated.
• Predictability: toddlers like having something familiar in a world full of changes.
• Senses: the toy’s smell, texture, and weight are reassuring to them.

What to do

• Don’t force them to give it up.
• Set gentle limits if it’s dirty or unsafe in certain places.
• Wash it or get a backup if possible, so a lost toy doesn’t turn into a meltdown.

Most children outgrow this attachment on their own, often between ages 2 and 5.
