Why is the sky blue during the day?

The sky looks blue during the day because molecules in Earth’s atmosphere scatter sunlight. Sunlight contains many colors, but shorter wavelengths—blue and violet—scatter more strongly than longer wavelengths like red. Our eyes are more sensitive to blue than violet, and some violet is absorbed higher in the atmosphere, so the scattered light we see across the sky appears mostly blue.
