Why do some songs instantly bring back memories?

Some songs bring back memories because music can act as a very strong cue for autobiographical memory. A familiar song is often tied to a place, person, or period in your life, so hearing it again can quickly reactivate the mental associations connected to that experience.

A few reasons this happens:

• The reminiscence bump: People often have especially strong memories for music from roughly ages 10 to 25, when many identity-forming experiences happen.

These are sometimes called music-evoked autobiographical memories. They can feel especially vivid, though they’re still reconstructive and can be influenced by later experience and memory bias.
