Why do old toys feel better made than new toys?

Old toys often feel better made because a few things are happening at once.

• Survivorship bias: the flimsy old toys broke and were thrown away, so the ones you still see are usually the durable survivors.
• Heavier materials: many older toys used metal, wood, and thicker parts, while many modern toys use lighter plastic that can feel less solid.
• Safety rules: today’s toys must meet stricter safety standards, which can mean softer materials, breakaway parts, and simpler designs.
• Cost pressure: mass production pushes makers to use thinner shells, fewer fasteners, and cheaper construction to keep prices down.
• Design changes: older toys often used simple springs and gears; many new ones rely on electronics and batteries, which can fail sooner.

So it’s partly real and partly perception: some old toys truly were more rugged, but the ones that survived also make the whole era seem tougher than it was.
