Why does my dog stare at the same spot on the ceiling?

Usually it means your dog is noticing something you can’t—most often a sound, bug, shadow, or reflection near the ceiling.

Common reasons:

• Pests or noises in the wall/ceiling: mice, insects, squirrels, or even a bee
• Light or shadows: tiny reflections, dust, or moving shadows
• Habit: your dog may be checking a spot where they saw a bug before
• Medical causes: in older dogs, this can be linked to confusion or cognitive decline
• Neurologic issues: brief staring spells or “fly-biting” can happen with focal seizures
• Compulsive behavior: anxiety or boredom can cause repeated staring

What to do:
Check the area for pests or light sources, then try to redirect your dog with a toy or treat. If they seem confused, don’t respond to you, or do this often, take a video and show your vet.
