Why does my dog bring food to the carpet?

Your dog is usually doing this because the carpet feels more comfortable or safer than the feeding spot.

Common reasons include:

• Better footing: tile, hardwood, or laminate can feel slippery, so the carpet gives them more traction while they chew.
• Preference for a softer spot: some dogs simply like eating on a softer surface.
• Bowl discomfort: the bowl may rattle, shift, be too deep or narrow, or otherwise feel awkward to them.
• Habit or comfort: some dogs prefer to carry food to a spot where they feel relaxed, or closer to their people.
• Resource-guarding or “take it somewhere safe” behavior: some dogs move food away from the bowl area, especially if they feel the need to protect it.

What you can try:

• Use a non-slip mat under the bowl.
• Try a shallower, quieter bowl.
• Feed them closer to where the family is, if that seems to be what they want.
• If they seem to prefer the carpet, put a washable mat or rug there on purpose.

If this is a new behavior or they’re also dropping food, hiding food, losing appetite, or acting uncomfortable, it’s worth checking with a vet in case there’s a dental issue, pain, or nausea.
