Why does my dog bark at the hallway after midnight?

Usually it’s because your dog is reacting to something you can’t hear or see — a faint sound, a shadow, movement outside, or the house settling. At night, those little triggers stand out more.

• Better hearing: mice in walls, HVAC clicks, distant noises
• Shadows/light: headlights, moonlight, moving branches
• Older dog confusion: senior dogs can get anxious or disoriented at night

• A nightlight to reduce shadows
• Close off the hallway with a door or baby gate
