Chest tightness during stress is often a physical response to your body’s stress system. When you feel threatened or very anxious, a few things can happen at once:

  • Fight-or-flight response: Stress can make your heart beat faster and raise your blood pressure, which may feel like pressure or tightness in the chest.
  • Muscle tension: Stress can tighten the muscles in your chest wall, shoulders, and upper back, creating a squeezing or aching feeling.
  • Breathing changes: Stress may lead to fast or shallow breathing, which can cause chest tightness, dizziness, tingling, or feeling short of breath.
  • Stomach/esophagus effects: Stress can worsen acid reflux or trigger esophageal spasm, which can feel like chest pain or tightness.

If it seems related to anxiety, slow breathing, grounding, or progressive muscle relaxation may help.
