Why does my mouse lag?

Mouse lag or stuttering is often caused by one or more of these issues:

1. Wireless connection issues

If you use a wireless or Bluetooth mouse, the signal can be disrupted.

• Why it happens: Nearby USB 3.0 devices, hubs, external drives, crowded wireless environments, or too much distance from the receiver can all cause dropouts or jitter.
• What to try: Move the USB receiver closer to the mouse, ideally with a short USB extension cable. Try a different USB port, and make sure the mouse is charged or has fresh batteries.

2. Sensor obstruction or a bad tracking surface

• Why it happens: Dust, hair, or debris around the sensor can cause skipping. Shiny or transparent surfaces like glass can also make optical sensors track poorly.
• What to try: Clean the sensor gently and test the mouse on a plain, non-reflective mousepad or desk surface.

3. High polling rate or system load

• Why it happens: Very high polling rates can add extra USB/CPU work, and in some cases that can contribute to stutter or input hiccups, especially if the system is already busy.
• What to try: If your mouse software allows it, try lowering the polling rate to 1000Hz or 500Hz and see whether the lag improves.

4. Software or power settings

• Why it happens: USB power-saving settings, driver issues, or background load can make the mouse feel delayed or inconsistent.
• What to try: Update mouse drivers/software, check for heavy CPU usage, and disable USB power saving for the hub/device if needed.
