Jaw clicking when you chew is most often from TMJ/TMD, the joint that hinges your jaw. The usual cause is the small disc inside the joint shifting out of place and snapping back as you move your jaw.

Common triggers include:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching from stress
  • Bite misalignment
  • Arthritis
  • Past jaw injury

If it’s mild and not painful, try:

  • Soft foods and avoid gum or hard, chewy foods
  • Warm compresses or an ice pack for 10–15 minutes
  • Avoid opening your mouth very wide
  • Relaxation if you tend to clench

See a dentist or doctor if you have pain, swelling, locking, trouble opening your mouth, or pain when chewing.
