Why does my dog sleep with one ear up?

Your dog most likely sleeps with one ear up because they’re relaxed enough to rest but still lightly monitoring sounds around them. Dogs can remain partly alert during sleep, and ear position often reflects listening, comfort, habit, or the way their ears naturally fold.

Common reasons include:

• Light sleep or alertness: One ear may stay angled toward noises, people, doors, or other pets.
• Breed or ear shape: Prick-eared or semi-prick-eared dogs often have one ear that naturally stays up or moves independently.
• Comfort position: The side they’re lying on can press one ear down while the other remains upright.
• Habit or environment: Some dogs sleep this way if they like to keep tabs on activity in the home.
• Dreaming or sound response: Ears may twitch, lift, or rotate during sleep.
