Why does my dog lick the couch?

Dogs lick couches for several common reasons: leftover food smells, boredom, anxiety or self-soothing, habit, attention-seeking, or because the fabric texture feels satisfying. Less commonly, frequent couch licking can be linked to nausea, dental pain, allergies, compulsive behavior, or other medical discomfort.

What to do:

• Check for triggers: Does it happen after meals, when you leave, at night, or during stressful moments?
• Clean the couch thoroughly with a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner to remove food/body odors.
• Redirect calmly to a chew, lick mat, puzzle toy, or training cue—don’t scold, which can increase stress.
• Increase exercise and mental enrichment if it seems boredom-related.
• Reward your dog for settling near the couch without licking.
• If it’s sudden, intense, hard to interrupt, paired with vomiting/drooling, appetite changes, weight loss, mouth pawing, or anxiety signs, book a vet visit.

If your dog only licks occasionally and stops easily, it’s usually harmless. If it becomes repetitive or compulsive, treat it as a behavior or health signal rather than just a quirky habit.
