Why does my dog lick the couch after eating?

Dogs may lick the couch after eating for a few common reasons:

1. Cleaning up food residue — They may have crumbs, oils, or smells left on their muzzle or whiskers and use the couch fabric like a quick wipe.
2. Following food smells — If the couch has traces of food from people eating there, your dog may be investigating lingering scents.
3. Self-soothing or habit — Licking can be calming for some dogs and may become a post-meal habit.
4. Stomach upset — If the licking is frequent, sudden, intense, or frantic, it can sometimes be a sign of nausea, reflux, or other digestive discomfort.
