Why does my dog bring me socks when I work?

Your dog is probably bringing you socks because they smell like you, and because it gets your attention.

Most often it’s a mix of:

• Your scent: socks carry your smell strongly, which can feel comforting to your dog.
• Attention-seeking: if you’re busy working, a sock is a reliable way to make you look up.
• Play or trade: your dog may want tug, a chase, or a treat in exchange.
• Instinct: some dogs like to carry and “present” objects.

To reduce it, don’t chase, keep socks out of reach, and give your dog a toy or chew before work starts. A calm trade for a toy or treat usually works better than taking the sock by force.
