Why does my cat stare at one corner at night?

When a cat stares intently at a corner at night, it is usually driven by their highly acute senses rather than anything supernatural. Cats possess physical capabilities that allow them to perceive things entirely invisible or inaudible to humans.

• Ultra-Sensitive Hearing (Pests): Cats can hear high-frequency sounds well beyond human range. They may be listening to mice, rats, termites, or bats moving inside the walls or ceiling, or even water vibrating through pipes.
• Superior Night Vision: A cat's eyes have more rods than humans, allowing them to see in near-total darkness. They may be tracking tiny dust motes drifting in a draft, subtle shadows cast by streetlights, or light reflections on the wall.
• Tactile Sensations (Drafts): Whiskers are incredibly sensitive to changes in airflow. A draft coming through a small gap in a corner or outlet can catch their attention.
• Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD): In cats older than 10–12 years, staring blankly into corners can be a sign of dementia or cognitive decline, often accompanied by nighttime vocalization or disorientation.
