Why does my cat run around after pooping?

Cats running around after using the litter box is often a normal, quirky behavior sometimes called “poop zoomies.” There isn’t one single proven reason, but a few likely explanations are:

1. A release after defecation — Pooping can leave a cat feeling relieved or more comfortable, which may be followed by a burst of energy.
2. Instinctive behavior — Cats are both predators and prey, so leaving the area quickly after eliminating may be an old survival habit.
3. Litter box discomfort or aversion — If the box is dirty, cramped, noisy, or they dislike the litter, a cat may hurry out and dash off.
4. Occasional digestive or medical discomfort — If the behavior is paired with meowing, straining, repeated trips to the box, vomiting, blood in the stool, or trouble finishing, it could signal constipation, pain, or another issue.

If your cat otherwise seems normal, this behavior is usually harmless. But if it starts suddenly, happens often, or comes with signs of discomfort, it’s a good idea to check with a vet.
