QUESTION
Why does my cat rub her face on my phone?
When your cat rubs her face on your phone, she is engaging in a natural behavior called bunting. Here are the primary reasons why your phone is one of her favorite targets:
1. Scent Marking and "Claiming" the Phone
Cats have scent glands concentrated around their face—specifically on their cheeks, chin, lips, and forehead. When they rub these areas against an object, they deposit pheromones. By marking your phone, your cat is claiming it as part of her safe, familiar territory.
2. Scent Association and Bonding
Your phone is covered in your scent because you handle it constantly. Cats are highly scent-driven animals. Rubbing her face on your phone allows her to mix her scent with yours, creating a "communal scent" that reinforces her bond with you and makes her feel secure.
3. Demanding Your Attention
Cats are excellent observers. They quickly learn that when you are holding that small, glowing rectangle, your eyes and hands are occupied. By rubbing her face directly on the screen or your hand holding it, she physically blocks your view and forces you to redirect your attention (and hopefully some chin scratches) to her.
4. The Phone is Warm
Electronic devices generate mild warmth when in use. Since cats have a higher baseline body temperature than humans (around 101–102.5°F), they are naturally drawn to warm surfaces, making a recently used phone a cozy spot to nuzzle.
