QUESTION
Why does my car make a ticking sound after I turn it off?
A ticking, clicking, or pinging sound after you turn off your car is often normal and usually comes from parts cooling down — but it isn’t always harmless.
Common reasons
-
Thermal contraction
The exhaust system, catalytic converter, muffler, and nearby heat shields get very hot while driving. After shutdown, they cool and contract, which can make metallic ticking, crackling, or popping sounds. -
Oil draining back
After the engine stops, oil slowly drains back into the oil pan. That can sometimes make a light tapping or dripping sound for a short time. -
A/C condensation
Water from the air conditioner can drip onto hot exhaust parts and cause sizzling or hissing sounds. -
Normal vehicle systems powering down
Some vehicles make brief electronic clicks, buzzes, or similar sounds after shutdown as modules finish powering down or run short self-checks.
When to worry
Get it checked if the ticking is:
- happening while the engine is running
- unusually loud or getting worse
- accompanied by a burning smell, smoke, warning light, or fluid leak
- paired with a dead battery or starting problems
If it’s only brief ticking after shutdown and the car otherwise runs normally, it’s usually just the exhaust and nearby parts cooling off.
