It can feel like your baby has a sixth sense, but this is usually a normal response to small changes in sound, light, movement, or body position.
Common reasons include:
- Tiny sounds or vibrations: When you put your phone down, the click, thump, or vibration can be enough to rouse a light sleeper.
- A change in your body position: If your baby is sleeping on you or next to you, even a small shift in your arm, chest, or shoulders can trigger a startle reflex.
- Light changes: A phone screen can be surprisingly bright in a dark room, so locking the screen or moving it away may change the light level enough to wake a baby.
- Sleep stage and timing: Babies spend a lot of time in lighter sleep, so they can wake more easily from small disturbances. If they’re overtired, it can also be harder for them to settle smoothly between sleep cycles.
- Association with transfer time: Babies can pick up on patterns. If putting the phone down often happens right before you move or set them down, they may start to wake at that cue.
What may help:
- Set your phone down on something soft to muffle noise.
- Turn off vibration if possible.
- Dim the screen before you move.
- Try putting the phone down a bit earlier, before you shift your position.
If your baby is waking frequently from very small disturbances, that can also be a sign they’re overtired or going through a lighter sleep phase.
