Your baby may be waking after about 30 to 45 minutes because that’s often one infant sleep cycle, and they may not yet know how to drift into the next one on their own.

Common reasons this happens

  • Normal infant sleep cycles are short. Babies sleep in much shorter cycles than adults, often around 30 to 50 minutes.
  • Sleep associations can matter. If your baby falls asleep by rocking, feeding, or being held, they may wake at the end of a cycle and need the same conditions to fall back asleep.
  • Developmental changes. Around 3 to 4 months, many babies begin sleeping more like mature sleepers, with lighter sleep between cycles, which can make short naps more common.
  • Timing can be off. If a baby is overtired or undertired, it can be harder for them to stay asleep across cycles.

What may help

  1. Try putting them down sleepy but awake when possible, so they practice falling asleep in the sleep space.
  2. Pause briefly before intervening if they stir at the 30- to 45-minute mark, since some babies resettle on their own.
  3. Keep the sleep space consistent with a dark room and steady white noise.
  4. Check wake windows so they’re not going down too early or too late.

Also rule out discomfort

If the short naps are frequent or new, check for things like teething, illness, reflux, hunger, or being too hot or cold.
