QUESTION
Why does my baby grunt all night?
In many cases, a baby grunting at night is normal, especially in newborns. Two common reasons are:
1. Digestion and gas
Newborns have immature digestive systems and are still learning how to coordinate the muscles needed to pass gas or stool. That can lead to straining and grunting sounds.
2. Active sleep
Babies spend a lot of time in active sleep, when they may wiggle, twitch, make noises, cry out, or grunt without being fully awake.
What you can do
- If your baby is asleep and otherwise looks comfortable, you can usually pause before reacting.
- If they seem gassy, gentle leg bicycling or a warm bath may help.
- If the nose sounds congested, saline drops and gentle suction can help before bedtime.
When to call the doctor
Grunting can sometimes be a sign of breathing trouble. Get medical advice promptly if the grunting happens with every breath or comes with fast breathing, nasal flaring, chest pulling in, poor feeding, fever, bluish color, or unusual sleepiness.
If you tell me your baby’s age and whether they have any other symptoms, I can help you judge what’s more likely.
