Why do people fear death?

People fear death for a few basic reasons:

• Instinct: Humans are built to avoid danger and stay alive.
• Unknown: Death is the ultimate uncertainty, and people often fear what they can’t understand.
• Nonexistence: The idea of consciousness ending is hard for the mind to accept.
• Dying itself: Many fear pain, suffering, loss of control, or becoming a burden more than death after it happens.
• Loss: Death means leaving loved ones, missing the future, and leaving things unfinished.

Psychology also points to terror management theory: awareness of mortality pushes people to seek meaning, belonging, religion, art, and legacy so they feel their lives matter beyond death.
