A common reason is that dreams often become most emotionally intense right before you wake up. As that happens, your brain and body can become more aroused during REM sleep, which makes waking more likely.

A few things can contribute:

  1. Emotional intensity rises
Vivid dreams often peak at moments of fear, urgency, or anticipation. That extra intensity can make the brain more likely to transition into wakefulness.

  2. REM sleep is easier to disrupt
During REM, dreaming is common and the brain is already in a lighter, more unstable sleep state than deep sleep, so a sudden change in arousal can wake you.

  3. Your brain may fill in the timing afterward
Sometimes it feels like you woke up right before something happened, but that impression can come from the way dreams are remembered. You may have actually woken during the buildup and your brain only retained the most dramatic part.

So the experience usually isn’t that your brain is predicting the event. It’s more that dream intensity and the tendency to wake from REM line up at the same time.

If this happens often, and especially if you snore, gasp, or wake suddenly in panic, sleep apnea or another sleep disruption could be involved.
