Comparing yourself to others is a very common human habit, not a character flaw. Psychologists describe it with social comparison theory, which says people naturally evaluate themselves by looking at other people.
A few reasons this happens:
- There’s no clear measuring stick for many things. For things like success, attractiveness, or being a “good” person, we often look at others to figure out where we stand.
- Your brain looks for safety and belonging. Comparing yourself can help you understand your place in a group and what’s expected.
- You use comparisons for motivation or reassurance. Looking at people doing better can inspire you, but it can also trigger envy or inadequacy. Looking at people doing worse can briefly make you feel better.
- Social media makes it worse. You’re often comparing your behind-the-scenes life to other people’s highlight reels.
A helpful way to manage it is to compare your present self with your past self. That keeps the focus on your own growth instead of everyone else’s pace.
If the comparisons are frequent or start affecting your mood, self-esteem, or daily life, it may help to talk with a therapist.
