QUESTION
Why do I feel like I’m always behind?
You may feel “always behind” because your brain is comparing your real, messy life to an idealized timeline: what you thought you’d have done by now, what others seem to be doing, and what your task list says should already be finished. That feeling is often less about actual failure and more about overload, unclear priorities, perfectionism, constant comparison, or not giving yourself credit for what you are doing.
A practical way to start:
- Write down everything you feel behind on.
- Sort it into three groups: truly urgent, important but not urgent, and “pressure I absorbed from others.”
- Pick one small next action for only the top 1–3 items.
- Define “done enough” before you start, so perfectionism doesn’t keep moving the finish line.
- Add a short weekly review where you note what you completed, not just what remains.
Also ask: are you behind, or are you carrying too many expectations for one person? If the feeling is constant, exhausting, or tied to anxiety, depression, ADHD, burnout, or major life stress, it may be worth talking with a therapist, doctor, or trusted professional for support.
