Why do I feel jealous when my baby prefers someone else?

Feeling jealous is very common. It usually means your baby’s preference is hitting a deep nerve around bonding, identity, and being the one your child depends on most.

A baby choosing someone else is usually not rejection. It often means your child feels secure enough with you to explore other relationships. Babies also go through normal phases of attachment, separation anxiety, and testing independence.

What helps:

• Reframe it: your baby can love you and still enjoy others.
• Don’t push closeness: forcing hugs or attention can make resistance worse.
• Notice the workload gap: if you do the hard daily care and someone else gets the fun moments, the jealousy can feel sharper.
• Use the break: when baby is content with someone else, rest or recharge.

The feeling is real, but it does not mean you’re a bad parent.
