Why do dogs sleep against your legs?

Dogs often sleep against your legs because it feels safe, warm, and comforting to them. Many dogs also like physical closeness with people they trust, so it can be a sign of affection and bonding.

Your legs can be an especially appealing spot because they’re close to you, easy to curl up against, and let the dog stay near while still being aware of your movement. Dogs also tend to be social animals, so resting near their person is a common, normal behavior.

This is usually harmless and often sweet. If the behavior changes suddenly — for example, your dog becomes much clingier than usual or stops wanting contact when they normally would — it’s worth considering stress, discomfort, or illness and checking with a vet if needed.
