Why do cats suddenly run around the house?

When a cat suddenly sprints around the house, it’s usually a normal burst of energy often called the “zoomies” or FRAPs (“frenetic random activity periods”), a term used by behaviorists.

Common reasons include:

• Pent-up energy: Cats sleep a lot and may suddenly release stored energy, especially if they haven’t had enough playtime.
• Predatory instinct: Running, pouncing, and darting can be a burst of hunting behavior, sometimes triggered by a bug, shadow, or tiny movement.
• After the litter box: Some cats zoom away after using the litter box; this may be related to relief, stimulation, or just wanting to move quickly afterward.
• Natural activity rhythms: Cats are crepuscular, so they’re often most active at dawn and dusk.
• Sudden irritation or discomfort: An itch, flea bite, or static shock can make a cat bolt.

When to see a vet: If this is new for an older cat, happens very often, or comes with yowling, frantic grooming, skin twitching, or other odd behavior, it’s worth checking with a vet to rule out issues such as hyperthyroidism or feline hyperesthesia syndrome.
