Why does my cat sit beside me but move when I pet her?

When your cat sits beside you but moves away when you pet her, it usually means she likes your company but doesn’t always want physical contact. For many cats, being near you is affectionate enough on its own.

1. She wants proximity, not touch
   Your cat may enjoy sitting close for warmth, safety, and companionship, but still prefer not to be petted at that moment.
