Why do cats knock things off nightstands?

Cats typically knock things off nightstands for three primary reasons: attention-seeking, play/hunting instincts, and boredom.

Because your nightstand is right next to your bed, your cat has likely figured out that knocking over a glass of water, a phone, or jewelry gets an immediate reaction from you (even if it's just you waking up to scold them). To a cat, any attention—even negative attention—is a reward.

How to Stop the Behavior

• Clear the Nightstand: The simplest fix is environmental management. Don't leave loose, knockable items on your nightstand. Use a heavy mug instead of a delicate glass, and place small items in a drawer.
• Ignore the Behavior: If your cat knocks something over in the night, do not look at them, talk to them, or get up to feed them. Any reaction reinforces the habit.
• Secure Essential Items: Use museum wax or double-sided sticky tape to secure heavier items like lamps or clock radios to the tabletop.
• Increase Daytime Activity: Ensure your cat gets plenty of physical and mental stimulation during the day. A vigorous play session right before your bedtime, followed by a meal, can help reset their internal clock to sleep when you do.
