Why do cats knock over full cups?

Cats often knock over full cups because they’re more interesting to investigate than empty ones. A full cup can wobble, splash, or make noise, which may prompt a cat to paw at it or bat it around.

Common reasons include:

• Curiosity and play: The movement and sound of a full cup can be more engaging than an empty one.
• Attention-seeking: If knocking over a cup gets a big reaction, your cat may repeat the behavior.
• Investigating smell, taste, or texture: Some cats are drawn to whatever is in the cup.
• Learned habit: If it has worked before, your cat may simply do it again.

How to reduce it:

• Use heavy, wide-based mugs or lidded tumblers.
• Keep cups out of reach when possible.
• Offer a separate water bowl or fountain.
• Avoid giving a big reaction if you catch the behavior in progress; calmly move the cup instead.

If the behavior is sudden or your cat is also drinking much more than usual, talk to a vet, since increased thirst can sometimes point to a medical issue like kidney disease or diabetes.
