Because those are often the items that get the biggest reaction.

Cats learn fast: if knocking off your glasses, mug, or phone makes you jump up, talk to them, or rush over, they’ve found a reliable way to get attention. It also fits their natural instinct to paw at, test, and “hunt” small objects. And the things you care about are usually sitting on the same high, flat surfaces cats like to patrol.

What helps:

  • Ignore the moment when possible; big reactions can reinforce it.
  • Secure valuables with museum wax/putty or move them out of reach.
  • Play more with wand toys for 10–15 minutes, twice a day.
  • Give a safe target like a few lightweight toys they’re allowed to bat around.

If the behavior is sudden or extreme, check for boredom, stress, or changes in routine.
