Yes—buy a used Nikon D850 for portrait photography if the body is in good condition, the price is right, and you’re comfortable with a large DSLR system. It is still a very strong portrait camera because it gives you high-resolution full-frame files and access to Nikon F-mount portrait lenses.

I’d be more cautious if the shutter count is very high. For example, a body with 400k+ actuations should be priced low enough to account for a likely shutter replacement, which may cost roughly $350–$500. In 2025, used D850 bodies in good condition were reported starting around £879, with cleaner examples costing more, so use that only as a rough benchmark and check current local pricing.

Buy it if:

  • You want excellent still-image quality for studio, editorial, weddings, headshots, or environmental portraits.
  • You already own Nikon F-mount glass or want to buy used DSLR lenses at good value.
  • You do not need the smallest body, latest eye-AF convenience, or mirrorless video features.

Skip it or compare mirrorless if:

  • You shoot lots of fast-moving portraits and rely heavily on eye-detection autofocus.
  • You want a lighter setup.
  • The used body has heavy wear, unknown history, no return option, or a shutter count high enough that the deal stops being a deal.

Before buying, ask for shutter count, sample RAW files, photos of the sensor/mount/body, battery condition, and return policy. For portraits, I’d rather buy a cleaner D850 body and put money into a great lens than chase the absolute cheapest body.
