buy a used/refurbished iPhone if you want smoother long-term performance, better video, iMessage/FaceTime, or you already use Apple devices. Buy a new Android if you want a fresh battery, full warranty, newer-looking hardware, USB-C on most current models, or the best specs for the money.

My practical pick: choose a certified refurbished iPhone over a random used iPhone if you go Apple. Battery health, activation lock, parts history, and warranty matter more than the logo. If your budget only gets you a very old iPhone with weak battery health, a new Android is usually the safer buy.

Quick rule:

  1. Pick used/refurb iPhone: you care about camera/video, resale value, long software life, and Apple ecosystem.
  2. Pick new Android: you care about warranty, battery, high-refresh display, storage, fast charging, or avoiding used-phone risk.
  3. Avoid very old iPhones unless the price is excellent and battery health is good.
  4. Avoid unknown used sellers unless you can verify IMEI/activation lock, battery health, and return policy.
