If your main goal is to spend as little as possible and build a big library fast, used DVDs on eBay are usually the better buy. DVD resale prices are often very low, so you can pick up a lot of movies for little money. They can also be a good way to collect titles that are harder to find on newer formats.

If you care more about picture and sound quality, start collecting Blu-rays. For most movies on a modern TV, Blu-ray will look noticeably better than DVD, and 4K UHD Blu-ray is the best option if you want the highest video quality and HDR. The tradeoff is that Blu-rays usually cost more.

A practical middle ground is to buy DVDs for cheap, lower-priority titles and spend Blu-ray money on films you love or movies where the extra quality matters most. That gives you the savings of used media without giving up quality where it matters.

One thing to keep in mind: DVDs are standard-definition, so they usually won’t look as sharp on modern TVs as Blu-rays. Also, physical disc condition matters, so check seller ratings and item descriptions before buying on eBay.
